The low FODMAP diet

A low FODMAP diet is a three-step diet used to help manage the symptoms of medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a widespread gut problem characterised by abdominal pain, bloating and gas, as well as changes in bowel habits, such as diarrhoea or constipation.

People living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease may also benefit from a low FODMAP approach, to help manage functional gut symptoms.

The low FODMAP diet aims to identify which foods and FODMAPs you tolerate, and which trigger your IBS symptoms. Understanding this will help you to follow a less restrictive, more nutritionally balanced diet for the long term that only restricts foods that trigger your IBS symptoms.

How a TDC dietitian can help with the low FODMAP diet:

  • Receive a low FODMAP guide that outlines easy low FODMAP snacks and meals that you can buy at the supermarket.

  • Troubleshoot any challenges that come up during the elimination phase to improve chances of a successful completion of this phase.

  • Take a systematic approach to reintroducing FODMAPs so there’s no guesswork behind what exactly has been causing your symptoms.

  • Identify your threshold levels of certain FODMAPs so that you don’t have to completely eliminate certain foods from your diet.

  • Optimise and personalise your diet to support your overall nutrient status and symptom management.
