Diverticular disease is when small pockets (diverticula) form in the lining of the large bowel. When these pockets become inflamed or infected, this is called diverticulitis. The cause of diverticular disease is not well known. However, genetics, diet, age and the gut microbiome are considered to play a role. Common symptoms of diverticular disease include:

  • Diarrhoea and/or constipation

  • Blood in stool
